چکیده

In this paper, we reveal inherent robustness issues of XCP (eXplicit Control Protocol), and propose extensions to XCP for increasing its robustness. XCP has been proposed as an efficient transport-layer protocol for wide-area and high-speed network. XCP is a transport-layer protocol that performs congestion control based on explicit feedback from routers. In the literature, many performance studies of XCP have been performed. However, the effect of traffic dynamics on the XCP performance has not been fully investigated. In this paper, through simulation experiments, we first show that XCP has the following problems: (1) the bottleneck link utilization is lowered against XCP traffic dynamics, and (2) operation of XCP becomes unstable in a network with both XCP and nonXCP traffic. We then propose XCP-IR (XCP with Increased Robustness) that operates efficiently even for dynamic XCP and non-XCP traffic. key words: XCP (eXplicit Control Protocol), traffic dynamics, robustness, stability, congestion control

Implementation and performance evaluation of explicit congestion control algorithms

As the Internet adapts to meet consumer demands for high performance in ubiquitous networking environments, congestion must be addressed using novel approaches to ensure system stability over increasingly unreliable and dynamic media. Our work focuses on implementing and studying the performance of two recent explicit congestion control protocols: XCP, eXplicit Control Protocol, and RCP, Rate C...

Explicit Rate Control for Anypoint Communication

This paper investigates explicit multiflow rate control for common forms of ensemble communication. We address rate control in the context of the Anypoint, a communication model that combines strong transport-layer guarantees with the flexibility of Anycast-style indirection. For example, Anypoint supports cluster-based services where extensible routers at the network edge route inbound request...

Stability Analysis of XCP (eXplicit Control Protocol) with Heterogeneous Flows

In this paper, we analyze the stability of XCP (eXplicit Control Protocol) in a network with heterogeneous XCP flows (i.e., XCP flows with different propagation delays). Specifically, we model a network with heterogeneous XCP flows using fluid-flow approximation. We then derive the conditions that XCP control parameters should satisfy for stable XCP operation. Furthermore, through several numer...

Performance comparison of router assisted congestion control protocols: XCP vs. RCP

In the current Internet, network overload is prevented by the congestion control of the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). The traditional TCP congestion control is an endto-end mechanism that suffers from some inherent shortcomings. A design alternative for the Future Internet is to use more feedback from the routers. Such router-assisted congestion control schemes can achieve a more efficie...

Improving XCP to Achieve Max-Min Fair Bandwidth Allocation

TCP is shown to be inefficient and instable in high speed and long latency networks. The eXplicit Control Protocol (XCP) is a new and promising protocol that outperforms TCP in terms of efficiency, stability, queue size, and convergence speed. However, Low et al. recently discovered a weakness of XCP. In a multi-bottleneck environment, XCP may achieve as low as 80% utilization at a bottleneck l...
